Academic Convocation

The school year has finally started. My first activity was to, with other faculty and staff, line the sidewalks leading under the arches and into the University as the incoming class--all 1,300 of them--made their way for the traditional procession. The faculty members applauded as they made their way, and this is apparently matched by a similar tradition of them walking out of the University under the arches upon graduation. It was a nice little indication that this is a fairly tight knit community. I wish I had my camera with me.

Then we had the academic convocation, for which I got all dressed up in my academic attire. I wore only the robe, not the hood or hat, because I'm not finished with that *%&$ dissertation yet. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture, but I can show you the suit I wore *under* the robe:

I was surprised to find out that the students were not part of this convocation--they got their own. This was just for us faculty--another indication of the tight knit community. All the big wigs gave their address. The new faculty were introduced, complete with pictures on a big screen, and we were given a copy of a history of the University. (The history ends in the late 60s, unfortunately. What I wouldn't give for a recent history of the philosophy department!)

(The convocation was held in the seminary chapel. Afterwards, they served snacks--and beer. At the seminary. Next to the chapel. Served by priests.)

It was a good day and I'm very excited to be part of the community here.

Very cool--are those the school colors in your tie?

No. I was thinking about getting a school colors tie, but I never got around to it. The colors are purple and...purple. (I think--well, I'm sure about the purple, but not sure about the second color, if that makes sense. Aren't there usually two colors?)

Never mind. I looked it up. The colors are purple and grey. They are believed to have evolved from the "Blues" and "Greys", the top two intramural baseball teams in the 1890s.

Ah yes, convocation. Did you stay up late writing syllabi afterwards? That's what I do. We also line up and have the students walk out between us at graduation- it was suprprisingly touching last year. But my hands were tired after 100 students- you'll have to take gloves in the future!

Good luck with the classes and the diss.
