Gregory's Speech Update

It's been a while since we mentioned anything about Gregory's speech. As most of you know, he's in school for speech therapy for developmental apraxia twice a week now (and they're considering moving him to three times a week). His classes are going well, the teachers tell us. He can say many consonant sounds now, including p, t, d, m, n, b. And while he can say lots of the vowel sounds, too, he can't put many of the sounds together yet. It really is amazing progress. His teachers are doing great things with him.

His best word is "more," and I can't tell you how wonderful it is to hear him ask for more now. He might have had seven cookies already, but when he asks for more with words my heart just melts and I give him another one.

He also is really getting to understand the mechanics of making sounds. Just a month ago, if we asked him to say a sound he couldn't say, he would jump up and down, flap his arms and say "da, da, da, da." Now he knows it takes certain sorts of mouth movements.

His teachers think he'll start to pick up speed in the spring. He's such a smart kid, and we can't wait to hear all the things in his head that we know he wants to tell us about but can't.
