Conversation with a four year old

To go along with Meaghan's post below, I thought I'd share my conversation with Gregory the other day about pets and money.

In a slightly sad sounding voice, Gregory begins: "I want a pet, Dad."

"But Gregory, you're allergic to dogs and cats."

"I don't want a cat. I want a dog."

"But you're allergic to dogs, Gregory."

"I want a dog I'm not allergic to, Dad."

"I do, too, Gregory, but we can't have a dog in our current house." (We rent our house now and we have a no pets clause in the lease.)

"I want a new house, dad."

"I do, too, Gregory, but we can't get one right now."

"I want a new house, tomorrow, dad."

"Oh, Gregory, daddy wants a new house, too, but we can't get one any time soon. We don't have enough money."

"Will you buy some money, dad?"

"Well, it's a bit complicated, but we can't really buy money."

Sadly, "ohhh." He thinks for a moment. "When I'm a big, big, big boy, can we buy a new house?"

"Yes, Gregory, we can get a house then," I say optimistically.

"When I'm a big, big, boy, I can have a dog I'm not allergic to."

"Yes, Gregory, you can."
